Case Study - CambridgeSide

It’s about multifaceted shopping experiences for a diverse market: A destination in Cambridge, Massachusetts for residents, college students, area workers, and tourists

Overview:

CambridgeSide features three levels of shopping and 100 of Boston’s favorite stores, specialty boutiques, and restaurants. Located minutes from downtown Boston in one of the world's greatest high-tech/bio-tech innovation districts, CambridgeSide is the centerpiece of an award-winning mixed-use project that includes a parking garage, two office buildings, and the Hotel Marlowe.

Developed by New England Development on the site of the original Lechmere store, CambridgeSide helped transform a blighted and industrial area of Cambridge into a dynamic destination featuring hotels, luxury apartment buildings, and many of the world’s leading companies in biotech research and innovation.

Challenge:

CambridgeSide has a diverse customer base, requiring a multi-pronged approach to leasing and marketing. The center’s trade area, with a growing population of more than 1.1 million, includes local and regional residents, college students, area workers, tourists, and business visitors. Two of the nation’s top educational institutions––Harvard and MIT––are located within a five-mile radius, and CambridgeSide is easily accessed by more than 250,000 students who attend college in Boston and Cambridge. Additionally, millions of tourists visit the center each year, and the local East Cambridge office market––one of the world’s greatest high-tech/bio-tech innovation district––has more than 20.6 million sf of office and R&D space and provides a steady stream of shoppers.

Solutions & outcomes:

To serve this diverse market, CambridgeSide offers a unique mix of some of the best specialty retailers in the country, including H&M, Banana Republic, Apple, J.Crew, Sephora, A|X Armani Exchange, Ann Taylor, and Club Monaco.  Anchor retailers Macy’s, Best Buy and T.J. Maxx provide robust shopping options and the newly renovated food court and multiple restaurants complement the shopping environment.

Special events and promotions throughout the year are targeted to different markets. Whether it’s a Celebrity Style event with Maria Menounos, outreach to regional fashion bloggers, or a Day of Family Fun with the annual Run & Ride and Halloween Trick or Treating for the local community, CambridgeSide continues to meet the needs of its diverse customer base with creative and forward-thinking merchandising and marketing.
