MEDFORD, MA – This isn't your father's grocery store. Wegmans will open its fifth Massachusetts location, which boasts a hefty 450-person workforce in 120,000 square feet of space, at Meadow Glen Mall in Medford Sunday morning. Customers who arrive early can join employees in the Wegmans cheer as the team welcomes its neighbors to its new home.
Plans to bring Wegmans to Medford were first announced in 2015. Last year, the interior mall space was demolished to clear space for the anchor tenant, which joins Kohl's and Marshall's at 3850 Mystic Valley Pkwy.
The store is divided into two parts – a traditional supermarket and the European-style open-air Market Café, which features stations ranging from sushi and vegetarian fare to pizza, subs and a revolving door of seasonal "comfort foods" like BBQ and Italian. The market seats 200 people and includes the only Burger Bar and Pizza Shop locations at Wegmans' New England stores.
"Our Medford store also has two newer features that aren't found in our other New England locations," said store manager Kevin Russell, a 31-year Wegmans employee. "The Burger Bar is a family-friendly in-store restaurant counter, serving burgers and sandwiches, salads, soup, sides, and beer and wine by the glass. The Pizza Shop here offers made-to-order pizzas baked in a custom rotating brick hearth oven, along with Sicilian-style pizza by the slice."
In addition to traditional supermarket offerings, Wegmans sells a host of international, natural, organic and kosher foods. The store's wines run the gamut from $6 bottles to selections from world-renowned wine estates, and there are approximately 1,000 different types of domestic, craft and imported beers for sale.
Wegmans opens at 7 a.m. Sunday, Nov. 5 (don't forget to set your clocks back so you're up in time!). The Wegmans cheer will begin at 6:55 a.m.
Meadow Glen Mall is located at 3850 Mystic Valley Pkwy.
