A $14 million Hyatt Place Hotel is coming to Altoona's Shoppes at Prairie Crossing next year.
Developer Mike Whalen said construction on the four-story, 112-room hotel could begin in early 2019. It will sit west of the Outlets of Des Moines, along the development's lake, at 480 Bass Pro Drive N.W.
The Altoona City Council approved a site plan for the project Monday night.
Whalen said plans are in the works for another strip mall building at Prairie Crossing — a retail, residential, entertainment and commercial development that sits on about 230 acres south of Bass Pro Shops along Interstate Highway 80 and Iowa Highway 65.
On Monday, the City Council approved a site plan for the previously announced Burger Shed restaurant that will sit between the new hotel and Johnny's Italian Steakhouse.
The casual sit-down restaurant and bar will feature specialty burgers, milkshakes, barbecue sandwiches, soups, salads and other items found at its kin eatery, The Machine Shed, which is owned by Whalen's Heart of America Group.
Whalen said he hopes to begin construction in a few weeks and open by May 27.
The strip mall will sit the southern end of the development near a Hy-Vee Fast & Fresh convenience store going in at the development's main entrance at Hubbell Avenue and Prairie Crossing Northwest.
The restaurant, hotel and commercial building add up to about $25 million in investment, Whalen said. Crews are finishing up an additional $7 million in paving, lighting and underground utility work, he said.
