CAMBRIDGE, MASSACHUSETTS (JUNE 2021) – CambridgeSide (CambridgeSide.com) is now home to Cambridge Bike Give Back, a local Cambridge organization that collects used bikes, brings them back to life and gives them back to the Cambridge community free of charge.
Cambridge Bike Give Back began during the summer of 2020. “We saw a need in the community and in addition to working our regular jobs, Cambridge Bike Give Back was born,” said Lonnell Wells, one of Cambridge Bike Give Back founders. The organization has given away over 100 bikes in the eight months since its inception. Recipients of bikes have included kids, single moms, and people who need bikes to get to job interviews.
“We want to get kids off video games, outside and getting fresh air,” says Marc Roberts, one of the organizers. Ensuring transportation equity in Cambridge means giving people economic opportunity as well as options for a healthy lifestyle.
“CambridgeSide is pleased to support Cambridge Bike Give Back, a wonderful organization helping to provide bikes for those in need in Cambridge,” says Melissa LaVita, Senior Marketing Director of CambridgeSide. “We love the concept of repairing used and older bikes and then donating them back to those who would not otherwise be able to own a bike,” she adds.
Cambridge Bike Give Back
Cambridge Bike Give Back collects, fixes, and gives away bikes for free to those in need in Cambridge. Founded in the summer of 2020 by three friends, following the death of George Floyd, the group’s goal is to help people without means of transportation to be able to travel around the city, as well to provide area youths with bikes. The group primarily serves Black and brown youth and families, although anyone with mobility needs is welcome to receive a free bike.
