CAMBRIDGE, MASSACHUSETTS (September 2020) – Help save lives by donating blood! CambridgeSide will host three blood donation drives this Fall in partnership with the American Red Cross on Fridays, October 2, October 23 and November 27, 2020 from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. The American Red Cross is now testing all blood, platelet, and plasma donations for the COVID-19 antibody.
The American Red Cross has established additional safety guidelines to ensure all donors are socially distanced. Donors are asked to register in advance by visiting CambridgeSide.com. Those who cannot donate blood, can still help by making a monetary donation at RedCross.org/donate/donation.
“We are pleased to partner with the American Red Cross again by hosting blood drives this Fall,” says Melissa LaVita, Senior Marketing Director of CambridgeSide. “The need for blood continues and we encourage people to make an appointment today,” she adds.
The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has stated that the coronavirus (COVID-19) does not pose any known risk to blood donors during the donation process or from attending blood drives. The Red Cross only collects blood from individuals who are healthy and feeling well at the time of donation -- and who meet other eligibility requirements.
At each blood drive or donation center, Red Cross employees follow safety protocols that include: wearing gloves and changing them often; wiping down donor-touched areas after every collection; using sterile collection sets for every donation; preparing the arm for donation with aseptic scrub; and conducting donor mini physicals to ensure donors are healthy and well on the day of donation.
The Red Cross has also increased vigilance concerning some of these safety protocols, including: enhanced disinfecting of surfaces and equipment; providing hand sanitizer for use before entering and throughout the donation appointment; temperature checks before presenting donors enter the blood drive or donation center; following social distancing practices between donors including donor beds, as well as waiting and refreshment areas; and staff wearing basic face masks. To ensure staff are healthy each day, the Red Cross has implemented standard staff health assessments prior to all blood drives.
