CAMBRIDGE, MASSACHUSETTS (December 2020) – CambridgeSide (CambridgeSide.com) will host a blood donation drive in partnership with the Massachusetts General Hospital (MGH) Blood Donor Program on Thursday December 10, 2020 from 11:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. in Canal Park next to CambridgeSide’s Food Court Entrance.
In order to maintain physical distancing, advanced reservations are required. Donors are asked to visit http://bit.ly/MGHCambridge to schedule an appointment. For more information, visit MassGeneral.org/blood-donor or call 617-724-9699.
“CambridgeSide is pleased to partner with MGH again to host this important blood drive,” says Melissa LaVita, Senior Marketing Director of CambridgeSide. “Giving blood is a wonderful way to give back during the holiday season and we thank all of our generous donors,” she adds.
Volunteer donors are the only source of blood for those in need
The need for blood does not stop for anything, not even a pandemic. It is estimated that every 2 seconds, someone needs blood. MGH is a level 1 transplant, cancer and trauma center that often works with the most difficult cases. This blood shortage could impact patients who need transplants, victims of car accidents and other emergencies, or patients suffering from cancer.
Blood Donation is a Safe and Necessary Healthcare Function
Blood drives are a strictly regulated medical process. MGH must adhere to CDC, FDA and hospital guidelines. MGH has efforts to include sanitization of all donor touched areas between each donor. Cleaning the pens, clipboards, blood pressure cuffs, desks, donor chairs, and more ensures a safe environment for all.
Donor appointments are required, as there is a need to limit the number of people donating at one time. MGH follows strict infection control measures including:
- Checking the temperature of staff and donors before entering a drive to make sure they are healthy
- All staff wearing masks
- All donors are required to wear masks
- Providing hand sanitizer for use before the drive, as well as throughout the donation process
- Spacing donors to follow social distancing practices
- Increasing enhanced disinfecting of surfaces and equipment
- All staff wear gloves and change gloves with each donor
- Using sterile collection sets for every donation
- Preparing the arm for donation with an aseptic scrub
To donate blood, individuals need to bring a photo ID, be 17 years of age (16 with parental consent), weigh at least 110 pounds and be in generally good health.
