CambridgeSide Hosts the Arlington Soap Box Derby

Unique Regional Races Held Indoors in CambridgeSide Parking Garage

CAMBRIDGE, MASSACHUSETTS (March 2019) –The Arlington Soap Box Derby has partnered with CambridgeSide to organize and co-host a series of three indoor Soap Box Derby race weekends this winter. The final weekend of racing is this Saturday and Sunday, March 16th and 17th with racing from 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. in the parking garage at CambridgeSide. Approximately thirty racers and their families from all over the northeast will join in two days of fun and excitement. Watching derby races is free and open to the public.

“CambridgeSide is delighted to host the Arlington Soap Box Derby, an action-packed series of exciting races featuring unique vehicles competing on a course created in our parking garage,” explains CambridgeSide Senior Marketing Director Melissa LaVita. “During the winter months, Soap Box Derbies need a safe, indoor course. We are thrilled to be able to be one of the few venues for these family-oriented competitions,” she continues.

The Soap Box Derby races are part of the All-American Soap Box Derby Rally Race program where racers ages 7-21 race cars they build based on standard kits in one of three divisions. Racers earn points, and high point earners have the opportunity to race in the International All-American Soap Box Derby Championships in July in Akron, OH. Soap Box Derby races are typically held outdoors which usually makes the racing season short in the northeast. The indoor rallies at CambridgeSide are one of only a handful of indoor races throughout the country and use one of the only indoor tracks that has a “real hill”, or continuous slope, instead of using very tall ramps to gain speed on a flat surface. This is attracting racers from as far away as Pennsylvania and upstate New York.
