MarketPlace PHL Honors Black History Month with Jazz Series and Historical Imagery

PHILADELPHIA — Jan. 31, 2018 — MarketPlace PHL, the restaurant and retail concessions management company at Philadelphia International Airport (PHL), launches its winter Jazz Series in honor of Black History Month on Thursday, Feb. 1 and debuts celebrated African American art. The Jazz Series will continue every Thursday in February from 4-5 p.m.

Travelers passing through PHL will enjoy the soulful sounds of live old-school jazz, performed by Arpeggio Jazz Ensemble. The group is led by Warren “Butch” Oree, who is no stranger to instrumental music. Oree has had a longstanding interest in the upright bass and started Arpeggio Jazz Ensemble in the mid-70s. Today, the band is actively involved with Woodmere Museum’s Friday Night Jazz Series and educational programs in Chestnut Hill, PA.

MarketPlace PHL has also partnered with Charles L. Blockson Afro-American Collection to provide historical photos by John W. Mosley, a photojournalist of 20th century Philadelphia who chronicled the vitality of the black community and life in the segregated city from the 1930’s through the height of the Civil Rights movement in the 1960’s. His photographs can be seen all month long on the B/C and F Food Court Tables.

“We are more than proud to honor Black History Month this February,” said Mel Hannah, vice president and general manager of MarketPlace PHL. “To feature the sounds of smooth jazz and famous photography within two of the airport’s food courts, our travelers are definitely in for a treat.”
