New England Development opened Mall of New Hampshire in August 1977 to much fanfare. As the first shopping center to be built in the state, this exciting new shopping destination enjoyed a resounding welcome and tremendous success. Not only was it New Hampshire’s only mall, its location in south-central New Hampshire drew customers from Massachusetts, Maine and Vermont, wanting to take advantage of New Hampshire’s lack of sales tax.
Mall of New Hampshire opened with anchors Filene’s, Lechmere and Sears. New England Development subsequently expanded the mall, adding anchors and numerous specialty stores. Today, the mall is the third largest mall in New Hampshire. New England Development sold the property in 1999.
