(Queens Chronicle – May 14, 2015) Nearly 30 employees and passengers at LaGuardia Airport are now sporting a bolder bald look after participating in a head-shaving charity fundraiser Monday at the airport’s Center Food Court.
This is the fifth year the shave has taken place at the travel hub, located in East Elmhurst.
The two hour-long event, in which two licensed barbers sheared individuals who secured donations to go bald, was hosted by the Food & Shops at the air travel hub and the St. Baldrick’s Foundation, a volunteer-driven organization that aims to fuel research finding cures for rare childhood cancers.
Between the festivities, before which an email blast was sent with links to where supporters could donate at a “LGA Cares” page online, and collection boxes placed around LaGuardia’s Terminal B for the past five weeks, the effort raked in more than $20,000.
Combined with money generated from fundraisers taking place over the past five years, the head-shaving initiative has raised more than $130,000.
Monday’s drive honored Elijah, an 11-year-old Long Island resident who has been fighting acute lymphoblastic leukemia.
Southwest Airlines gave Elijah’s family round-trip airfare and also raffled off two tickets.
