In honor of mothers and to bring attention to May as Melanoma Awareness Month, the Richard David Kann Melanoma Foundation, Palm Beach Outlets and their volunteers will be presenting a community event the day before Mother’s Day that will offer sun safety awareness, promotions and activities for families so they may educate themselves about the dangers of over-exposure to the sun.
Kids can make a sun safety visor, get a “Sunny” Tattoo, watch Dino Dave create balloon art, and get their face painted. Glam Squad Productions will provide music. Moms can relax and sip an umbrella drink, get a mini massage or have Palm Beach Beauty Academy adorn them with make-up. Memorable sun safe themed pictures will be available in a photo booth while the DJ spins some reggae tunes. There will be raffle prizes, free awareness bags and UV detection key chains to the first 1,000 attendees.
Melanoma facts:
• Getting a sunburn more than doubles one’s chances of getting melanoma later in life.
• Melanoma is the most common form of cancer for young adults 25-29 years old, and the second most common form of cancer in 15–29 years olds.
• Florida is the number two state in the country with melanoma incidence.
• With education, melanoma is almost 100 percent preventable.
The Richard David Kann Melanoma Foundation was started in 1995 after Richard Kann died at age 44 of a late detected melanoma. The mission of the Melanoma Foundation is to educate the community about the prevention and early detection of skin cancer, especially its deadliest form, melanoma.
