Founded in Seattle, Washington, in 1971, Starbucks has a long history of not only creating coffeehouses, but also gathering places that create a sense of community. Chairman and CEO Howard Schultz traveled to Italy in the early 1980s and had a vision of bringing the Italian coffeehouse tradition he enjoyed there back to the United States.
